The history of the mountain town Sankt Andreasberg is closely linked to silver ore mining. The town was first mentioned in a document as early as 1487. St. Andreasberg was granted town rights in 1537. This former silver mining town has preserved its original character with its colorful wooden houses and idyllic streets and alleys in the lower town. In the upper town as well, for example on Schützenstraße, one can see the beautifully maintained traditional Upper Harz houses.
Following the closure of the last silver ore mine in 1910, its development into a high-altitude health resort accelerated. Sankt Andreasberg is recognized as a climatic health resort within the Harz National Park.
The town of Sankt Andreasberg is situated on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 600 to 900 m. In summer, this small and romantic mountain town is surrounded by fragrant mountain meadows with an unparalleled variety of species.
The favorable climate of the Upper Harz has always provided excellent conditions for winter sports at altitudes above 600 m. In winter, the “Matthias-Schmidt-Berg” and “Sonnenberg” ski areas have become attractive holiday destinations in the heart of the Upper Harz. The 550 m long summer toboggan run, the newly established mountain bike and downhill adventure park, as well as annual traditional festivals and a diverse entertainment program, offer fun for the whole family.
Hiking enthusiasts can look forward to a network of approximately 200 km of trails, including two car-free forest inns: the Rehberger Grabenhaus, located on the Rehberger Graben in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Harz Water Management System,” and the Rinderstall inn. There are steep streets as well as beautiful hiking trails across mountains and meadows offering magnificent views. These also hold a special appeal for mountain bikers. Adventurers will also find plenty to enjoy, including climbing, kayaking, and outdoor experience holidays.
With approximately 3,000 guest beds in hotels, guesthouses, apartments, and holiday homes, this community of 1,700 residents offers the ideal accommodation for every traveler.
